Parliament discusses agreement with Serbia on Danube navigation routes
ZAGREB, Feb 5. (Hina). The Croatian parliament on Friday briefly discussed a bill on the ratification of a Croatian-Serbian agreement on navigation on inland waterways and their maintenance.
A state secretary at the Ministry of the Sea, Transport and Infrastructure, Mario Babic, said the EU encourages cooperation among countries in an effort to redirect road and railway transport to cheaper, more efficient and environmentally more acceptable navigation routes.
He said the bill provides the same conditions for Croatian and Serbian ships in ports, following the principle of reciprocity and equality.
Deputies welcomed the bill, expecting it to ensure the development of trade and raise communication with the neighbouring country to a higher level.
Petar Mlinaric of the Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) hailed the fact that inland waterways would be managed from Vukovar.
Goran Beus Richembergh of the Croatian People's Party (HNS) said Croatia must exploit the benefit of having navigable rivers on its soil.
He is convinced the bill would contribute to settling an entire set of issues related to overall economic relations with Serbia and raising communication standards between the two countries.
Danijel Srb of the Croatian Party of Rights (HSP) said there was 11,500 hectares of land on the other bank of the Danube river that belonged to Croatia, according to cadastral books.
The sitting resumed with a debate on a bill of amendments to the law on farmland. _________________ www.croradio.net
